Babyboom in Indonesia

  • Jangan terlalu mengandalkan Negara…

Indonesia is in a good mood

Last year is not a good year for most of us, that is what I heard from some friends in some industries, many are missed their volume yearly target.

Retail study shown that generally most product sales were declining starting in Q4 2008, Q1 2009 situation is getting worst  and stabilize in low level in Q2 and Q3.  In Q4 though, I saw some recovery in sales  and Indonesia managed to close 2009 festive season just slightly  higher than last year.

I read another report today, this time is among consumers (among Internet users, done by Nielsen global in almost all countries), impressively saying that Indonesian has the highest confidence level when asked about economic condition compare to any country in the world.

New Indomie Packaging

Is anyone noticed a new Indomie packaging above?  I think the noodle war is now really heated up. After Mie Sedaap launched its new variant kari special, few months later, Indomie launched its new packaging after more than a decade using the same packaging design.

Although the picture is different, it is not radically changed, they still retain the color, font and placement. Presumably they do not want to alienating their current consumers. at glance, it will be difficult to see the changes, but some that I sked the opinion agree it is now look more modern than the old one.

Another new thing in the packaging is, they now adding a recipe at the back of the pack. The microwave cooking instruction now gone. How many of you cooking noodle using microwave anyway.. :)

If you do not remember the old packaging, please see below …

Smoking incidence in Indonesia

This is questions is asked a lot, and quite difficult to answer, only the one who have done a study can answer it. However today I come across an article from BBC saying that the smoking incidence in Indonesia is  more than 60%, the highest in the world.

No wonder Phillip Morris Indonesia bought sampoerna and BAT (British American Tobacco) bought Bentoel. a very lucrative market I see

This is incidence of smoking regularly, means does not include the one who just occasionally or rarely. There is no further explanation on what is regularly means nor when the study is conducted, but that is enough for a curious cat like me.

Strangely, I got this information from article in BBC about someone losing his teeth after a cigarette he was smoking was exploded… How weird is that?

You can read it here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/8493288.stm

If it is no longer on the net, here I print it for you

Brand new noodle : Indosedap? :)

I was having wild thought…

Indomie is a great brand in instant noodle, and so is Mie Sedaap, why not combine it together…? It will be easier for the consumers as most of them know these two brands right…?

To my disbelieve, someone else is actually thinking exactly the same, and they come up with this product…

the son of Indomie and Mie Sedaap

look at the cue, The word “mie Goreng” its using Indomie font, the upper right is Indomie ribbon, at the bottom there is Mie Sedap word using Mie Sedaap font (small word kriyuk-kriyuk added). The actual brand is actually Spix and it is a snack noodle not instant noodle.

And who come up with the idea…? some one from PT. Siantar Top is…  but..  Shame on you Sir or Mam…!

  1. because you stole my idea
  2. Is that the best you can do..?
  3. You should call it Indosedaap..!

just Kidding.. :D

Fake discount…

Anything equal or below 20% discount for non FMCG product (like apparel, shoes etc), it’s not a discount period. Ok I might be exaggerating, it certainly not all,  but be careful if you see 20% discount or less, it may be on sale forever, or having more sale period than not.

For FMCG, the average Joe or Jane will know what is the real price anyway. A big chance that the consumer will know that it is fake discount or not, they will feel cheated and disappointed if a manufacturer or retailer doing that.

Supermie Go is “on air” again

Just watching the new ad from Supermie Go, which quite different with the previous version. Before the focus is more into “Goreng” concept, now is more into the quality of the product. Which exactly something that Indofood need to communicate to the consumers.

The target is still the same though.. a fun and younger segment, the talent they are using is project pop. Surprisingly the price is actually cheaper than Mie Sedaap. This is the answer from indofood to Mie Sedaap threat. Same target segment, same (if not better) quality and cheaper price.  “LET’S GET IT ON..!”

Minutemaid Pulpy Orange after 2 years of launch

The good thing working in a research company is you can track the performance of a product that fascinated you… I wrote about Minute Maid Pulpy Orange about a year ago, and checking their performance again now… most of the New Product Launch will not last for one year if they fail.

I can see that this product is have very good performance compared to last year, so why this product can be quite successful. I asked some friends who bought this product for their lunch and this is one of them.

Q. Why do buy this product ? Obviously you like it but why you like it…?

A. More fiber is good, thats you got more from this juice

Q. Wait, you think this is juice…? The manufacturer never said it is juice loh… I am pretty sure that it just flavored water

A. Really…? but it has pulp in it, and it is coming from the orange right…?

Q.  Yes, they just added the pulp which probably a by product of a real orange juice. So is that why you buy this product… you think it is juice?

A. Yes… But I like the flavor too, its not too bad and the pulp is healthier choice… come to think of it, it seems on the bit expensive side yah, if this is not juice.

Some more interview with other purchasers, I can say that most of them like the pulp which they think its healthier choice. Like the flavor regardless of this product is real juice or not.

So I probably can say that the product acceptance is (very) good, some of them think that this is real juice with pulp but they OK with the flavor.  Combined with heavy communication and attractive ad make this product is successful in the market

So… good job Minutemaid Pulpy Orange…
