Kisah Raja dan Bayi

Alkisah raja Sulaiman diminta tolong oleh dua orang ibu yang keduanya mengaku bahwa mereka adalah Ibunya seorang bayi, singkat cerita akhirnya si Raja mengatakan: “baiklah aku akan bagi bayi ini menjadi dua” dan iapun langsung menghunus pedangnya.

Seorang ibu melompat, menghalangi dan memohon: Jangan ya Raja… biarkanlah anak ini hidup, saya rela dan ikhlas ibu itu menjadi ibu dari anak ini. Akhirnya Raja bersabda, kalau begitu bawalah anak ini pulang karena hanya seorang ibu sejati yang tidak mau anaknya mati meskipun harus mengalah.

Pernahkah anda mendengar cerita pendek itu? Saya terkesan dengan ibu yang merelakan anaknya hidup dg orang lain demi bayi tersebut hidup, dan merasa tidak suka terhadap ibu yang membiarkan anak itu di belah agar “adil”

Cerita itu mengajarkan sikap “lebih baik tidak dapat semua daripada tidak adil” bukan suatu sikap yang “terpuji” bahkan cenderung destruktif. Pesan yang sederhana, tapi mungkin tidak semua setuju.

Katakanlah bila kita sebagai pihak dirugikan dalam sebuah pembagian insentif, bonus dll tentu kita protes, tetapi kalau misalkan si pemberi bonus bilang “kalau begitu biar adil saya hentikan semua bonus dan insentif”, akankah kita merelakan untuk bonus tetap dibagi meskipun tidak fair dan anda tidak kebagian…?

Kalau anda menjawab iya, saya salut kepada anda dan kalau anda menjawab “tidak” saya menjadi saksi bahwa anda tidaklah sendirian

Kisah Jarum dan Benang

Teringat sebuah cerita anak-anak jaman dulu yang menceritakan tentang seorang wanita yg menggosok gosokkan sebuah besi ke batu, rupanya dia sudah sangat lama melakukan hal tersebut karena besinya sudah mulai kelihatan aus.

Kemudian seseorang bertanya, “Ibu, Ibu sedang apa..?” dan diapun menjawab, “saya sedang membuat sebuah jarum, nanti kalau saya sudah punya jarum, saya bisa menjahit, dan nanti saya akan menjahit baju yang indah yg akan dipakai puteri raja”.

Tapi saya tidak ingat akhir ceritanya bagaimana… karena saya selalu berpikir, kalau saja ibu itu minta pasti saya beri dg senang hati, bahkan saya sempat bermimpi memberikan ibu itu sebuah jarum dan benangnya sekalian.

beberapa tahun kemudian saya masih ingat cerita itu tapi mulai berpikir, kenapa ibu ibu yang semuanya punya jarum dan benang, tidak membuat baju yg indah untuk putri raja (oh mungkin raja sudah punya tukang jahit sendiri)… oh ternyata jarum dan benang hanyalah untuk memperbaiki baju yg sobek atau kancing yg lepas padahal itu bisa untuk membuat baju yang indah…

Tahunpun berlalu, dan akhirnya saya punya pemikiran kalau saja saya memberi ibu dalam cerita itu sebuah jarum dan benang, mungkin baju indah itu juga tidak akan terlaksana. Coba saja lihat banyak orang mengatakan andai saja aku punya kolam renang, aku akan berenang setiap hari, buktinya banyak rumah dg kolam renang yg tak pernah dipakai kolamnya, dan banyak lagi contoh yg lainnya…

Dengan seiring waktu, saya berpikir, oh kalau Ibu dalam cerita itu betul betul ingin membuat baju indah, maka pemberian Jarum dan benang akan sangat membantu dia dan pasti akan terlaksana karena semangatnya yang menggebu gebu adalah modal yang besar untuk membuat apapun terlaksana.

Sekarang saya sangat menyesal kenapa tidak memperhatikan cerita itu baik-baik sehingga tahu akhir ceritanya dan saya tidak akan penasaran sampai mati nanti..

Tetapi kalau ditarik dari cerita tersebut, bayangkan kita yg hidup di jaman serba komputer dimana Jarum dan Benang seolah olah suatu yang sepele, tapi kita tidak bisa menghasilkan sesuatu…what a waste…!

Resources and resourcefulness

Resources is always limited, resourcefulness can be unlimited
Give a project with a lot of resources but not resourceful person to run, the project will not succeeded
Give a project with limited resources but very resourceful person to run, the project will still be completed

Most of the problem in unsuccessful project is the resourcefulness not the resource, we may be put the wrong person there, we can’t expect the person very resourceful if she/he does not like the project. Who want to work with a grumpy, unhappy, not so enthusiast leader anyway…

How do we treat freebies?

We tend to take for granted anything free, the air, our health, or probably water. We rarely think that we are so lucky to have a free air, health or water as part of our daily life. We forgot that it is a gift from God or mother nature and we sometimes abuse like it will be free forever.

We will think seriously about it when its no longer free, we try to get back our health at all cost when we are sick or we may have to buy a clean water at higher price than fuel.

If we are producer, will you give a free products or services to the person that does not care about us? I won’t… I’d rather give it to someone who need it, who value it and can improve our relationship. Even if we give freebies as a gift (something that we do not expect any return) we do not want our products or services to be abused or trashed.

If we are on the receiving end of the freebies, there are many ways to say thank you for the gift (if it is relevant to you), you can put a link on your blog, recommended to others, give testimony, buy their products or just say “thank you”… sincerely…

Oh one more thing… To me, a gift does not have to be a freebies…

Award Ariel dan Cut tari akan ditarik?

[dropcap]O[/dropcap]brolan makan siang kemarin… Beberapa teman bilang bahwa award Joni andrean utk Ariel dan Cut tari akan ditarik. Ariel mendapatkan award untuk kategori “The Best Hair Do for Male Singer” dan Cut Tari mendapatkan “The Best Make Up for Female Presenter”. Come’on lah, award itukan untuk make up dan rambut, gak ada hubungan dengan video mereka.

Mereka juga tidak bisa dikatakan mereka membohongi Joni Andrean, waktu mau dapat award, tidak ada kriteria / atau ditanyakan tentang moral. Penarikan award justru akan membuat konsumen mencibir: “siapa elu”, “emang lu paling bersih” dst dst. Saya sarankan untuk Joni Andrean agar tidak menarik award tersebut.

Kalaupun anda mereasa kecolongan, konsumen anda sudah tahu kog… Let it Go… Move on…!

Raise your hand..!

[dropcap2]W[/dropcap2]hy we as Indonesian are too “shy” to ask questions or give opinion during trainings or seminars or other events. Let alone challenging the speaker on the topic. I have seen many times when speaker ask simple opinion to the audience with only three possible answer (Agree, Not agree, No opinion) large number of audience did not raise their hand at all. In contrast Indian will happily give their comment or opinion on most of the things even without asked. Why is that…?

Since I am Indonesian and have the same tendency, I probably can offer some explanations:

Indonesian has been taught, not to argue with higher rank or older person. Asking question or giving contradictory questions can be seen as arguing, so if we do not agree to the speaker, we tend to keep it to our self.
We probably afraid, afraid that we asking stupid questions, afraid of giving wrong opinion etc. The stake is too high, everybody is watching, if we do give wrong answer or opinion, we will embarrassed our self in front of a lot of people.
As eastern, we are very shy people, we tend to lay as low as possible, do not want to be on the spotlight. It’s in our cultural

Although the value thought by our ancestor is good, I think it has bad impact for our growth, we can not get the optimum result of the trainings or seminars if we do not actively participating. The doctrine deeply nailed down in our unconscious mind, It will pull us down if we want to raise our hand.

So how to free our self from this situation..? I have few tips that works for me, you can try it if you want.. here is how:

Take the very front seat (which usually empty anyway), hence you can only see few people looking at you when you asking questions. If you take the back seat, you will see a lot of eye looking at you when you ask questions, it give additional pressure.
Give your self quota that you will ask at least two questions and try to find a good questions by listening fully and digest what the speaker said and try to make it relevant with our experience, if it seems doesn’t fit with our experience, it is candidate for a good question. Try to engage more with speakers.
If we get comfortable asking questions or give opinion now we can do it from any seat we want. My last advise do not over do it…

Keeping It Fresh

Every one like it fresh i.e Seafood, Coffee, ideas, blog etc. Fresh most of the time means something new. There you go, add something new to everything will almost always guarantee to make it fresh… here some example:

New photography equipment will be a nice boost to our passion
Trying new technique will give us a different result
New post on the blog make it fresh
New website layout / feature will give visitor to poke around
New Friends will give us new perspective
Wake up early morning to enjoy new day of our life

The List can go on endlessly… but why we prefer to do it the same thing again and again…?

Gayus is Us

Have very good morning conversation today… If we were Gayus.. what wil we do..? With only 5 years of service he managed to have 25 billion rupiahs (2.5 million US$) that is this year only.

Now if we were Gayus, who are working in a very corrupt government institution, can we do it differently? Almost everybody in the institution is doing the same. If you do not do it, your career will be a dead end, because the corruption is deep infected to the core and bone.

Not only one institution, many other institution is also involved in this. Can you imagine that the case is involving the Tax payer, Tax officer, Police, Attorney, Lawyer, Judge and God knows who else. Certainly I can not call everyone involved but, seems to me it is all of us doing it.

Question really is how to stop this madness…? How about death penalty like they have in China. Although I agree, I am sure that the Indonesian population will shrink at least by half, if we really adopt the death penalty for the corruptor…
