Why is it difficult to be happy

February 7th, 2010 Posted in Brand "You" No comments »

It is always fun to see a movie about someone who live life to the fullest, some one who knows what they want, do what they like and pursuing their passion. It is not always an easy life, but at least they  enjoy it and in the end or overall, they have a happy life.

But why is it difficult to be happy..? Just watched the Three Idiots movie couple hours ago, although their jokes is not new they taught us why is it difficult to “live life to the fullest” and why it seems impossible to do what we really like or passionate about.

more on: why is it difficult to be happy

What moves you?

Ask any career or life coach about how to be successful or how to be happy in this life, their answer will be similar.

Do something that you are passionate about.

That answer mentioned many time over and almost become cliche. I will also answer the same if you ask me, but most of the time when I suggest that, I got replied… “But.. I do not have something I really passionate about” or “but I really like reading a novel how can it makes me successful in my career”.

Ok, let’s forget about the career or job or things that you do for someone else shall we..? Say this week is last week you are in this world, God kindly enough giving you fame and glory, as long as you do not break the ten commandment you are free to do anything you want in the next seven days… anything. What you are you going to do? Are you still doing nothing? Are you still reading a novel?

Now, If God kindly enough to give you (much-much) longer life, but not so much fame and glory, what are you going to do? Is your answer for above questions still hold? if yes.. congratulation you have found your vision. And to tell you the truth, actually, there is nothing wrong with doing nothing and reading novels if that is really what you want.

And if you ask me, here is what I want to do, traveling around the world see new places and greet the people living there… will talk more later and it going to be series of articles…

Picking someone else brain

January 30th, 2010 Posted in Brand "You" No comments »

No one can be expert on many things. Human can exist and reign the world because they have the ability to learn and share knowledge and work together in such a complex way. If one of the insect can do the same, I am sure human existence will be under the mercy of cockroaches.

As social creature, we constantly learn from someone else consciously or not, but consciously picking someone else brain will giving us a specific piece of knowledge to solve our unique problem.

We join a forum, discussion groups, become a fan of Facebook page, following certain hash key in twitter simply because we want to pick someone else brain. It is completely OK if we just observe while learning, but the more active we are to more we gain as a groups.

Can you imagine if  all member of forum discussion is just observing and not sharing, the forum will have no value to the group member. Hence if you are part of the group, might as well be active, do not afraid commenting or asking questions, is part of the learning.

To effectively pick someone else brain, we also need to give something in return, be active, be proactive, share ideas, share provoking thoughts, share your problems to your crowd and I am sure you will gain more knowledge than just observing.

Have a very good weekend everyone…

And Happy Birthday to Marketing Club. They have a seminar today, a very good chance to pick (a lot of ) brains. Do not missed it and do not forget, there are two things that you can get simply by asking

Currency, your currency

It is interesting to see how world currency evolve.

At first, the currency is the product it self, we barter things, and then some use shell and some also start using salt as salary and it moved to precious metal, and then now moved to a worthless paper with some pretty printing on it. US$ is the currency of the world but now Euro getting stronger and slowly taking US$ dominance to be world currency and so on and so on.

Currency is not all about money…

  • Website visitors is currency
  • Google, Alexa, yahoo rank are currency
  • Nielsen ratings is currency and so is you market share
  • And names are currency too

Currency is about trust, you can not have currency without trust. If a currency losing its user trust, the value will decline. I remember a story, where in the past, you can use a napkin paper signed by a conglomerate to do a business with other company. On the other side of the coin,  US$ losing its dominance because users trust is slowly eroding,

If a well known celebrity tweet that one particular restaurant is good. Chance that the follower will flock in trying that restaurant. If a well known unbiased website said one particular product is bad, more consumer will abandon the product right away.

How about your name, how trusted is your name? Is it  a good currency? Unfortunately we can not buy trust, money can speed up awareness level, but trust have to be earned, have to be build.

To me, building trust come down into three things :

  1. Commitment
  2. Honesty
  3. Integrity

Start building your own currency now…

Working Class Hero

January or February, is time for employee appraisal,  you usually have to make a case how worthy you are for the company. Your manager will decide how big is your salary rise, or whether you are worthy of promotions based on your performance. But again performance is the quite subjective, if you are close with your manager, you may have some advantage.

Its sucks I know… but its a sacred ritual for all company drone to do it every year without fail… John Lennon have beautifully portraying this situation.  “Working class hero” from John Lennon may be a good song to remind us to what we are now (and what we are not…) enjoy…

or you can just click this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lKwXwU5iWs to watch it in Youtube. The lyric is as the following
