Basic Statistic

Read moreRead more

Plasa.com is life again

First of all congratulation to Plasa.com who just relaunched their services yesterday. I am sure most of you already forgotten this portal website. It started long time a go when the internet penetrations in Indonesia is still very low. Like most of the dot-com venture, it got hit by dot-com bubble burst and it is in “coma” condition since then.

Now it seems that PT. TELKOM is injecting quite big fund (rumor says: it is about two trillion rups) around Rp. 20 billion to make it life again. I think it is a good move when the Internet penetration is now in double digit, and we also start to buy things from internet, Plasa.com wil have a big potential to be success.

Warning to all brick and mortar store… it is another competition for you, luckily if you can’t fight them, you can Join them. However it is not free serice, Plasa.com will take.. I don’t know (based on rumor)… 10% ? (can some one correct me if I am wrong) from transaction value. If it is true, it will be a huge turn off for most of us. 2.5% – 5% is about right IMO.

Update: I just got a confirmation that Plasa.com will write off any transaction fee in 2010, this is a very good chance to try the service. They will build the community and we sell them to their community. If it is work, you can relax and see the order coming in from this portal. If you think the transactional fee is too high… just do this they are business people, they talk business :) .

I just register today and try few things, some features (like iklan baris)  not yet up and running. Seems to me that Plasa.com is still trying to be “everything” there is a “free blog” facility for their members, which I am sure they will be a light year behind blogspot.com or wordpress.com in terms of features. Will Plasa.com try to compete with them? Instead of  doing all of this, why not having a Indonesian blog directory? I am sure it will be much better for the community.

All and all, congratulation to Plasa.com for the re-launch,  I am sure, with a strong finance back up and managed by a strong professionals team, I expect Plasa.com will be different and very consumer focus in the very near future.

Indonesia is in a good mood

Last year is not a good year for most of us, that is what I heard from some friends in some industries, many are missed their volume yearly target.

Retail study shown that generally most product sales were declining starting in Q4 2008, Q1 2009 situation is getting worst  and stabilize in low level in Q2 and Q3.  In Q4 though, I saw some recovery in sales  and Indonesia managed to close 2009 festive season just slightly  higher than last year.

I read another report today, this time is among consumers (among Internet users, done by Nielsen global in almost all countries), impressively saying that Indonesian has the highest confidence level when asked about economic condition compare to any country in the world.

After reading my yesterday article, few friends asking me, “what is generation C ?”, And it expand to: how many generations we have, Are they any generation A, B or X? and so on and so on…

Unlike other generation segment, this generation C is actually stand for “Content”. Content that they created and generated by them self,  adding billion-peta bytes of  text, images, audio and video on an ongoing basis.

Sara lee Will Close Indonesian Business

This news is already in circulation since early November 2009 that Sara Lee is letting go his non food business. Since they have no food business in Indonesia, Sara Lee effectively packing their bag and leave from Indonesia market.

Here is what I know who buying their business in Indonesia (and regional as well)

  • Unilever bought entire personal care division for US$ 1.9 billion in cash. The strong brand in Indonesia is Sanex for liquid soap and deodorant, while other brand Radox is not really have presence in here.
  • They also have “Sara Lee” brands for personal care which I think together with Switzal and Purol, will be part of the deal with Unilever.
  • P&G bought their air freshener brand called Ambipur  for US$ 470 Million.
  • But who is buying Kiwi, the true and tested shoe polish… ( I heard that kiwi is  also used to polish wooden craft somewhere in Central Java).  Can’t find the information anywhere else, if you know who is buying it, please put it in comment section.

I do not believe that Unilever will keep Sanex brands in Indonesia, they have many of their own brand already for liquid soap and deodorant. I am sure they will kill the brand or simply milk it.

while Switzal, purol and (especially) Ambipur may see a better future as the purchaser do not have the category, I expect there will be a heavy support on this brands. once the dust is settled down.

So… Good Bye Sara Lee…

Instinct May Be Better Than Research

A marketing research study usually asking consumers about their attitude, their behavior and and their opinion on many things. Problem is there are many instances that consumers are trying to rationalize their decision making and opinion, but yet we are all know that they are not a rational consumers.

Their rationale is mostly based on their experience or current knowledge. Hence if they asked about “new product to the market” (the product is totally new and no one actually seen it or taste it before) they will be difficult to give a proper answer or probably will answer based on the product category closest to it.

Rumors says that Kopiko did a study prior its launch, and the result come back with a “No Go” recommendation (do not know if it is true) and I do not know the method of the study.. its only a rumor OK… But I can understand if  that consumer reject the idea coffee candy, because to them coffee should be hot and drank in the afternoon.

Luckily they follow their instinct  and  they now sold in many countries, one of the Indonesian pride
